About Bhopal
Bhopal is the capital of Madhya Pradesh. At the 2011 census the Bhopal Municipal Corporation area had 1,798,218 residents, up from 1,458,416 in 2001, while the wider metropolitan area counted 1,917,051 and Bhopal district 2,371,061.
As the state capital, Bhopal has a large government sector, but it also has a significant engineering base. Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) runs a major unit in the east of the city, and the neighbouring Govindpura industrial area grew up largely to supply it. Mandideep is the other main industrial area serving Bhopal.
Economy and main industries
Public administration, education and healthcare employ a large share of Bhopal's workforce, creating steady demand for printing, stationery, catering, transport and professional services.
Engineering is the main industrial activity. BHEL's unit in the eastern part of the city is the anchor of local industry. Govindpura, an area within the BHEL township, has an industrial estate made up mainly of ancillary units supplying BHEL, with around 1,044 industries in total. The National Green Tribunal has heard cases on pollution from units in the Govindpura area, so environmental compliance is a live issue for firms there.
Mandideep has developed as an industrial town over several decades; it had 49 industrial units as early as 1983 and has grown considerably since.
Main business areas and markets
MP Nagar is Bhopal's main commercial and educational district, divided into Zones I, II and III, with offices, showrooms, banks, coaching institutes and hotels. New Market and TT Nagar are long-established commercial areas with retail shops and offices, and Bairagarh, near the airport, is another busy trading area.
The old city market, in the historic part of Bhopal, is another prominent area for commercial ventures and traditional trade.
For industry, Govindpura and the BHEL area in the east of the city, and Mandideep, are the main addresses for factories, fabricators and industrial suppliers.
Engineering and BHEL suppliers
Many of Bhopal's small manufacturers depend on BHEL orders. Govindpura units typically supply components, fabrication and repair services. Buyers looking for engineering job work in central India often start here, and it is common for firms to list their vendor registrations with large public sector companies.
Finding businesses in Bhopal
Common searches in Bhopal include engineering and fabrication units, BHEL vendors, government contractors, coaching institutes, hospitals, hotels and caterers, and shops in MP Nagar and New Market. IndiaYP lists Bhopal businesses by category and locality.
