About Chandigarh

Chandigarh is a union territory and a planned city laid out in numbered sectors. At the 2011 census the union territory had 1,055,450 residents, of whom 960,787 lived in the city itself. The city also forms the centre of the "Tricity" with Mohali in Punjab and Panchkula in Haryana, which share its telephone code.

Its planning shapes how business works. Commerce is concentrated in designated market sectors, manufacturing in a separate Industrial Area, and offices and IT firms in a dedicated technology park, so it is usually clear where to look for a given type of business.

Economy and main industries

Chandigarh's economy is based on government, services, trade and light industry. The Industrial Area was developed in two phases covering about 1,200 acres, with Phase I of about 776 acres and Phase II of about 486 acres, and a third phase of about 153 acres is being developed. It is home to small and medium manufacturers, workshops and a number of company offices.

Information technology and business services are concentrated in the Rajiv Gandhi Chandigarh Technology Park, which hosts software and IT-enabled services companies.

Main business areas and markets

Sector 17 is Chandigarh's main city-centre market, with showrooms, banks, offices and restaurants. Sector 22 is another busy commercial sector; its Shastri Market and Mobile Market are well known for clothing, accessories and mobile phones.

The Industrial Area Phases I and II, linked to the city sectors by Udyog Path, are the main addresses for workshops, small factories, wholesalers and automobile dealers. The Rajiv Gandhi Chandigarh Technology Park is the main location for IT companies.

The Tricity extends the business area beyond the union territory, with Mohali home to the airport and the Aerocity area.

Getting around the sectors

Addresses in Chandigarh are given by sector number, which makes businesses easy to locate. Sector 17 is the central business district, and other sectors such as 22 have their own markets. Industrial Area Phase I is about 6 km from Sector 22 by Udyog Path. When searching, it is worth checking whether a business is in Chandigarh proper or in Mohali or Panchkula, as they share a telephone code and are often listed together.

Finding businesses in Chandigarh

Common searches in Chandigarh include IT and software companies, automobile dealers and workshops in the Industrial Area, mobile and electronics shops in Sector 22, hospitals, coaching institutes, immigration and visa consultants, and property dealers. IndiaYP lists Chandigarh businesses by category and sector.
