About Coimbatore

Coimbatore is one of Tamil Nadu's main industrial centres. At the 2011 census the city, within its pre-expansion limits, had 1,050,721 residents. The corporation was enlarged in 2011, and the wider urban agglomeration had a population of a little over 2.1 million.

The city's reputation rests on small and medium manufacturers. It is often called "Pump City" for its many pump and motor makers, it produces most of India's wet grinders, and its textile mills draw on cotton grown in the surrounding region. Much of this industry is made up of small and medium firms with close links to local suppliers.

Economy and main industries

Pumps and electric motors are Coimbatore's best-known products. The city's pump makers supply a large share of the national market, and names such as CRI Pumps, Texmo Industries, Suguna and Deccan Pumps are based here. In recent years Coimbatore's pump makers have faced strong competition from manufacturers in Gujarat.

Wet grinders are another speciality. According to one estimate, about 75 per cent of India's monthly output of wet grinders is produced in Coimbatore, by more than 700 manufacturers. Textiles are the third pillar: the city is surrounded by cotton-growing areas and has a long-established base of spinning mills, which account for a significant share of India's textile mill capacity.

Small engineering firms, foundries and machine shops supply all of these industries, as well as automotive and machinery customers elsewhere in India.

Main business areas and markets

Coimbatore's industry is spread across the city and its outskirts rather than concentrated in a single estate. Pump and motor manufacturers, foundries and machine shops are found in a number of industrial areas and small-industry estates, often grouped by trade. Textile mills are spread across the district and neighbouring areas.

CODISSIA, founded in 1969 with 40 members under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, is the main association for the city's small industries and a useful first contact for buyers looking for local manufacturers.

Small industries and suppliers

For buyers, Coimbatore's strength is the density of its supply chain. A pump or grinder maker can source many of its components and machined parts from local suppliers. Many firms are willing to take job work or make to specification, which makes the city a common choice for sourcing engineering components in southern India.
