About Jaipur
Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan. At the 2011 census the area under the Jaipur Municipal Corporation had 3,046,163 residents, up from 2,322,575 in 2001.
The city is closely associated with coloured gemstones. For generations the cutting, polishing and trading of stones took place in small workshops and offices inside the Walled City, and Johari Bazaar is still the best-known address for the trade. Since the early 2000s much of the larger-scale manufacturing has moved to the export park at Sitapura on the city's southern edge.
Economy and main industries
Gems and jewellery are Jaipur's signature industry. Stones imported from around the world are cut and polished to local specifications in the old city, in areas including Pahar Ganj, and then sold to domestic and international buyers. Until the early 2000s the industry was largely limited to the Walled City.
The Export Promotion Industrial Park at Sitapura, which includes a gems and jewellery special economic zone developed by the Rajasthan State Industrial Development and Investment Corporation (RIICO), changed that. Many exporters now run multi-workshop operations there, and several firms have moved from cramped premises in the old city to larger purpose-built units.
Tourism and hospitality, handicrafts, textiles and wholesale trade account for much of the rest of the city's economy.
Main business areas and markets
Johari Bazaar, inside the Walled City, is the traditional centre of the gemstone trade. It has more than 400 shops, and historically manufacturing, wholesale and retail all took place from its small offices and showrooms. Many dealers in cut and polished stones still operate there, even though some larger firms have moved out.
The surrounding bazaars of the Walled City, including Pahar Ganj, hold gem-cutting workshops and traders in rough and polished stones. Sitapura in the south is the main industrial address for jewellery manufacturing and export, with organised workshops, security and logistics services suited to larger orders.
Gem and jewellery trade
Buyers in Jaipur generally deal with three kinds of firm: traders in loose stones, often based in or around Johari Bazaar; cutting and polishing workshops in the old city; and jewellery manufacturers and exporters at Sitapura. It is common to source stones from one dealer and have them set by another, so many businesses list both their trading and manufacturing addresses. Certification and valuation services are also in steady demand.
Finding businesses in Jaipur
Common searches in Jaipur include gemstone dealers, jewellery manufacturers and exporters, handicraft makers, textile printers, hotels and tour operators, and wedding services. Because the gem trade is split between the old city and Sitapura, searching by both product and area gives the most useful results. IndiaYP lists Jaipur businesses by category and locality.
