About Pune

Pune is the second-largest city in Maharashtra by population. At the 2011 census the Pune Municipal Corporation area had 3,124,458 residents, and the urban agglomeration, which includes the separate Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, counted 5,057,709.

The city's economy is unusually industrial for its size. Automobile and engineering plants stretch north and west from Pimpri-Chinchwad through Bhosari to Chakan and Talegaon, while the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park at Hinjewadi is one of the largest IT parks in the state.

Economy and main industries

Automobiles and auto components are Pune's best-known industry. The MIDC industrial area in Pimpri-Chinchwad is dominated by automobile and auto ancillary firms, alongside steel, engineering and printing units. Bhosari, about 14 km north of the city centre on the Pune–Nashik highway, has an MIDC area with small, medium and large industries, including Tata Motors.

Chakan has developed into a major automobile hub in recent years. Industrial parks there and at Ranjangaon host companies such as Volkswagen, LG, Whirlpool and GE. According to a Knight Frank India report, the Chakan–Talegaon belt accounts for nearly 80 per cent of Pune's warehouse leasing.

Information technology is the city's second engine. The Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park at Hinjewadi, about 20 km west of the city and developed by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation from the mid-1990s, houses offices of over 800 companies.

Main business areas and markets

For manufacturing and engineering suppliers, the main addresses are the MIDC estates at Pimpri-Chinchwad and Bhosari, and the industrial parks at Chakan and Talegaon. These areas hold tool rooms, machine shops, sheet-metal fabricators, transporters and warehousing companies.

Hinjewadi, in its three phases, is the main concentration of software and IT services companies, with related businesses such as coworking spaces, caterers, staffing agencies and shuttle operators nearby. The park handles a daily commute of more than 250,000 employees, and the city bus operator PMPML runs services from the park to Pune Airport.

Industrial belt and logistics

Pune's industrial belt has created strong demand for logistics. Warehouses in Chakan and Talegaon serve manufacturers and e-commerce firms, and transport operators run regular services to Mumbai and other cities. A Free Press Journal report noted that 49 MSMEs had proposed investments of about Rs 2,321 crore in the Chakan–Bhosari belt, although traffic congestion in the area remains a common complaint among employers.
